Ghost illustration made for REVOLVER Magazine. This was made in 4 days time: I had worked out the idea already but had to wait for reference photos,to bring the art to the level I wanted. Originally planned to be one of the cover variants but alas that didn’t happen (yet?); I’m unsure why it didn’t make it on the cover.
“When Jimmy asked me if I was interested in doing another Ghost illustration, I instantly knew what to do. The (fantastic) album art had just been released & I, like many others, appreciated the nod to Aleister Crowley. I wanted to repeat the nod, by using the other iconic Crowley photo/pose as the base.
The casted shadow provided room to fit in another scene & I was able to place some nameless ghouls into the spotlight/shadow.
The wallpaper is referring to Victorian wallpaper, as made by the arts & crafts movement, placing it into the timeframe of “Empira”. Both emblems on the wallpaper are symbolizing Mankind’s departure from nature/paradise & the start of industrialization. 1 has a coiling snake around an apple from which the Ghost star is radiating A laurel wreath symbolizes man as a ruler/ emperor. The other has clockwork mechanics morphing into a skull with factories in the background.
To fit the format better & provide some upward motion, I opted to have the shadow in a classic devil profile shape, connecting the art even more to Ghost: “just call me Mephistopheles”.
